DEAD FLY CHRISTIANS

 

Text: Ecc. 9:18-10:1
“Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good. Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.”

 

    I.Dead Fly Christians Damage the Cause of Christ
      “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour:…”

      • With their constant complaining (cp. Psalms 144:11-15)
      • With their consistent criticism (critical of the work while doing nothing themselves)
      • With their continual cynicism (Proverbs 17:20  He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.)

      How many Christians have been damaged, yea, how many churches damaged, some for years because of Dead Fly Christians stinking up the church and making a mess of everything they get near?

    II. Dead Fly Christians Deceive the Children of Christ
      “…so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.”

      • They know only enough to be dangerous (…ever learning, and never able to…2Tim. 3:5-7)
      • They know only enough to be deceptive (…deceiving, and being deceived. 2Tim. 3:12-13)
      • They know only enough to be damaging (Proverbs 26:6  He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.)

      Dead Fly Christians will never leave quietly but will always take some other baby Christians along with them. Then after they’ve left, they will always seek to bad-mouth the work to anyone who will listen. Unfortunately, they can usually find someone who will listen.


    III. Dead Fly Christians Destroy the Crowns of Christ
      “…but one sinner destroyeth much good.”

      • Because of a heart problem (Jer. 17:9)
      • Because of a help problem (wrong priorities, i.e. too busy, too tired, too pre-occupied)
      • Because of a hurt problem (burned in the past by so-called “Christians”, usually)

      Imagine being almost right on the Book, going about leading a somewhat separated life, even going so far as to homeschool your kids, but then finding out that any crowns you might have earned were destroyed because of a disgusting, deceitful heart that can only seek to tear down and destroy those few who are trying to do right. Imagine standing before God someday and telling Him the reason you never handed out a gospel tract was because you found them too “offensive”, when the real reason was just a wicked heart that feared man but not God!

      Proverbs 6:16-19
        These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17  A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18  An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19  A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
